The reference position for hold'em strategy, explained plainly: what the ranges are, a spaced-repetition deck to actually memorise them, and an honest map of what comes next — including whether you can win while playing gently.
"6-max 100bb" is not a game you have to go and find. It's a measuring stick — the one set of conditions almost all published poker strategy is written for.
6-max means six players at the table. 100bb means everyone has a hundred big blinds in front of them. At your 1 / 2 home game, one big blind is 2 chips, so a 100bb stack is 200 chips — roughly what you'd have after a normal buy-in.
Those two numbers are the reference point because they change everything downstream. Six players instead of nine means fewer hands can beat you, so you can play more of them. A hundred big blinds is deep enough that hands like suited connectors can win a big pot, but shallow enough that top pair is still worth committing for.
You play 6–9 handed. When there are more than six players, the extra seats are all effectively UTG — the earliest, tightest position. So: use the UTG range for every seat from the first to act up until three seats before the button, then HJ, CO, BTN as normal. Nothing else changes.
The whole of preflop strategy is one idea: the later you act, the more hands you can play. Acting last means you've already seen what everyone did. That information is worth more than cards.
The D token is the dealer button. Names are counted clockwise from it, and it moves one seat every hand — so you sit in all six positions over six hands.

Those percentages come from solver output for 100bb 6-max cash, opening to 2.5bb from every seat except the small blind, which uses 3bb. The button opens two and a half times as many hands as UTG. If you take away one number from this page, take that one.
Then almost nothing changes, because the seat's name was never what set the range — the number of players still to act behind you was. A 4-handed table is this table with the two tightest seats deleted: the first player in has three opponents left to act, so they open like a cutoff, 28%. Add players instead and you bolt tighter seats onto the front: the first seat at a 9-handed table has eight players behind it and opens about 12%.

The small and big blind are forced bets — money in the pot before you've seen a card. That creates two effects that pull in opposite directions.
The practical version: defend wide, then give up quickly and cheaply when the flop misses you. Beginners get the first half right and the second half badly wrong.
Real solvers play a mixed strategy — the same hand gets raised 70% of the time and folded 30%, at frequencies no human can execute. Every chart, including the ones here, is a simplification that rounds those mixes to a single action. That costs you a tiny amount against a perfect opponent and absolutely nothing against your home game. Learn the simplified version; it's the version that works.
Suited hands are above the diagonal, offsuit below, pairs on the diagonal. Hover a square to see it named. The grid is the standard way every poker tool displays a range — getting comfortable reading one is itself a skill.
Your instinct is right, and it's measurable: as more players stay in, the hands that win are the ones with a tail — the ability to make something huge — not the ones that are merely ahead right now.
In a pot with n players, an equal split of the equity is 1 / n. So the bar for "am I doing better than my fair share?" moves every time someone else calls:

That falling bar is why a hand can have less equity multiway and still be more profitable. What matters isn't your raw number — it's the gap between your number and the bar.
Here is that gap, computed by simulating each hand 24,000 times against random opponents, all the way to the river. The last column is the one to read: how far above an equal share the hand sits.

Look at JTs versus AJo. Heads-up, AJo is comfortably better — 64% to 57%. Five-way, they're level, and JTs is rising while AJo is falling. Nothing about the cards changed. What changed is which outcomes matter.
Heads-up, you get paid for being ahead. One pair is usually ahead of one random hand, so one pair is a real hand.
Multiway, you get paid for making the nuts. With four opponents, somebody has connected with the board almost every time — so the question stops being "is my pair good?" and becomes "can this hand make a straight, a flush, or a set?" Hands with a fat tail win the pots that matter. Hands that top out at one pair just donate.
All-in equity understates small pocket pairs. 77 flops a set about 1 in 8 times, and the other 7 times you fold for free. You're not buying 26% equity — you're buying a cheap lottery ticket with a huge payout, and multiway there are more people to pay you when it hits. That's implied odds, and it's the one thing raw equity can't see.
So the real multiway ranking isn't "77 is bad". It's: 77 is bad if you plan to play it as a pair, and good if you plan to fold it the moment you don't flop a set.
Mostly no — and this is the place the "make the nuts" idea gets misread. Two questions feel like one here, and they have opposite answers.

Two out of three hands finish as one pair or worse. Straights and flushes combined are under 8%. Poker is overwhelmingly a game of one pair — the nutted hands matter because they win big pots, not because they're common.
Suited hole cards make a flush by the river 6.6% of the time. Offsuit ones still make one 2.0% of the time, using the board. So the entire flush premium of being suited is about four and a half points — and here's the part that surprises people:

JTs makes a straight more often than a flush — and JTo makes straights at exactly the same rate, because suits have nothing to do with it. Being suited is worth roughly 4 percentage points in total. That's enough to turn a marginal hand into a playable one; it is nowhere near enough to rescue a bad one. Suited is a tiebreaker, not a reason.
Never pay in advance for a draw you might get. Always price a draw you already have.
Because once you actually flop a draw, the numbers invert completely — these are exact, from flop to river:
Flush draw (9 outs) → 35.0%
Open-ended straight (8) → 31.5%
Two overcards (6) → 24.1%
Gutshot (4 outs) → 16.5%
A flush draw on the flop is a coin-flip-adjacent hand. A hope of a flush before the flop is 6.6%. Same suits, completely different decisions.
So the practical answer: don't sit down thinking about flushes. Play the position charts, and when a draw actually appears, count your outs, use the 4-2 rule, and compare it to the price. That's the whole of it.
And apply the same scepticism to them. When a third heart lands and someone bets, they have the flush far less often than it feels — a flush is 3% of all hands. Respect it multiway, where several players each get a roll of the dice; discount it heads-up, where usually nobody has it and the bet is just a bet.
You asked whether there are more considerations shaped like this. There are two big ones, and both work the same way — they change which outcomes you're being paid for.
With 200bb behind instead of 100bb, the tail matters more again: implied odds are bigger, so speculative hands gain and one-pair hands lose. With 30bb, the reverse — you'll be all-in before a draw completes, so raw high-card strength wins and suited connectors lose most of their value. Deeper stacks favour hands that can make the nuts; shallower stacks favour hands that are simply ahead now.
Position doesn't change your equity at all — it changes how much of it you realise. Out of position you're forced to commit before you know what they'll do, so you capture less of what your hand is theoretically worth. It's roughly worth a couple of percent, applied to every hand, on every street. That's the entire reason the button opens 43% and UTG opens 17%.
You have it right: at each decision you compare the probability you'll win from here against the price you're being asked to pay now. Money you already put in is not yours and never was — it belongs to the pot, and it counts as part of the prize, not as part of your cost.
This is why "I've already put so much in, I have to call" is the single most expensive sentence in poker, and why "I've only put a little in, so I can fold" is equally wrong. Both are the same error pointed in opposite directions.
The one legitimate extension is implied odds: you may also count money you expect to win on later streets, because that's still in the future. Past money, never. Future money, carefully.
Cards you get right come back later and later — 1 day, 6 days, then multiplying. Cards you miss come straight back. That's the whole Anki idea, and it's why 15 minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday.
The deck only contains hands near the edge of a range, plus every pocket pair and suited ace. Nobody needs a flashcard telling them to fold 7-2 — the money is in knowing whether K9s opens from the hijack.
Two separate questions, and it's worth keeping them apart: should money go in, and how much. Get the first one right and the second is close to a lookup table.
There are only two good reasons to put money in voluntarily. Every bet and every raise must be one of them:
If neither is true, betting is just donating. That single test resolves most spots. The classic mistake is betting a medium hand — it isn't called by worse (they fold everything you beat) and it doesn't fold out better (they call with everything that beats you). That hand should check.
1. Fold if your equity is below the price. Count outs, ×4 on the flop or ×2 on the turn, compare to bet ÷ (pot + 2×bet). Below it, you're done — no matter how pretty the hand is.
2. Raise if you beat the range that would call your raise, or if you have a real draw plus a chance they fold. Both of those make money; nothing else does.
3. Call with everything in between — your equity clears the price, but you're not ahead of what continues against a raise.
Notice call is the residual, not the default. Most beginners have that backwards.

Those are online sizes. Live and at kitchen tables people call far more, so raise bigger — 4bb opens are standard live, and more with limpers. If four people call your 2.5bb raise you haven't achieved anything; the point of raising is to be up against one or two opponents, not five.
One idea covers most of it: the more hands that can still beat you later, the more you should charge to see the next card.

A pure bluff of B into a pot of P breaks even when it works B / (P + B) of the time:
Bet 33% pot → needs to work 25%
Bet 50% pot → needs to work 33%
Bet 75% pot → needs to work 43%
Bet 100% pot → needs to work 50%
This is why small c-bets are so strong: one opponent who missed the flop folds far more than a quarter of the time, so a third-pot bet prints money almost automatically. And it's why big bluffs need to be rare — half the time is a lot to ask.
Preflop: raise to 2.5bb (4bb live), plus one for each limper. Three-bet to 3× in position, 4× out of it.
Postflop: a third of the pot on dry boards, three-quarters on wet ones, and check your medium hands.
Always: before you bet, name which of the two reasons it is. If you can't, check.
Charts get you to competent. Here's the actual order the rest arrives in — each rung only makes sense once the one below it is automatic.
Memorise the six opening ranges. Fold everything else without agonising. This single change turns most losing players into break-even ones, because the majority of money lost at low stakes is lost before the flop, by playing hands that were never worth playing.
To call a bet of B into a pot of P, you need to win B / (P + 2B) of the time. Count your outs, multiply by 4 on the flop or 2 on the turn, and compare. That's it — that's the arithmetic of poker.
What it really buys you is a reason. You stop calling because the hand feels good and start calling because the price is right. Those are different skills and only one of them scales.
Beginners ask "what do I have?". Everyone above them asks "what can they have?" — the whole set of hands consistent with how they've played, then how your hand does against that set.
This is the jump that makes everything else possible, and it's uncomfortable, because it means accepting you'll never know. You're not guessing their hand. You're pricing a distribution.
An A-7-2 rainbow flop massively favours whoever raised before the flop — they have all the aces, and their opponent's calling range has almost none. A 9-8-7 with two hearts favours the caller, who holds far more of those connected hands.
This is where solvers behave in a way that surprises people: on dry flops where they hold the range advantage, they bet 77–85% of their entire range using a tiny 33% pot sizing. Not because each hand is strong, but because the whole range is, and a small bet only needs to work a quarter of the time.
Size stops being a habit and becomes a choice. Small bets on dry boards with a wide range. Big bets — 75% pot and up — when the board is dynamic and you want to charge draws or get value from a strong, narrow range. Overbets when your range contains hands theirs simply cannot beat.
The discipline that comes with it: your big bets must contain both your best hands and some bluffs, or an observant opponent simply folds every time you bet big.
The cards in your hand change what's possible in theirs. Holding the ace of spades on a three-spade board means they cannot have the nut flush — which makes your hand a better bluff, precisely because it's a worse hand.
It's counter-intuitive and it's real, and it's the point where poker stops resembling any other card game.
Everything above describes balanced play against a good opponent. Against a specific bad one, balance is a waste. If someone calls too much, you stop bluffing entirely and value bet hands you'd normally check. If someone folds too much, you bluff relentlessly and never pay them off.
This is the last rung technically, but the first one that will make you money at a kitchen table — and it's why a solver-perfect player and a good live player often make opposite plays in the same spot, and both are right.
You said you're gentle and passive by default, and that you like being that way. Here's the honest answer, in two halves — because one half is good news and the other isn't.
Passive is the losing style. Not "suboptimal" — actually, reliably losing. Calling is how you pay to see cards; betting and raising are the only two actions that can win a pot you'd otherwise lose. A player who only ever calls has removed one of the two ways to win.
The specific leak isn't bluffing too little. It's not charging people. When you check your strong hand because betting feels confrontational, you're letting someone draw out on you for free, and you're winning a pot of 20 when you could have won a pot of 90. Over a year that is almost your entire loss.
Here's the good news, and it's bigger than it sounds: aggression in poker is not social aggression. Betting when you're ahead isn't pushing anyone around. It's collecting something you already earned by the cards. The hand is a spreadsheet, not a staring contest — and nobody at the table experiences your bet as a personal act.
And the style that suits you already exists, has a name, and wins:
Play few hands. Around 20%. You fold constantly, which is quiet, restful, and correct.
Almost never bluff. At a home game full of people who call too much, bluffing is close to a pure loss anyway. Skipping it costs you very little.
But bet your good hands, every street, without apology. This is the one non-negotiable. Not big, not clever — just consistently.
Fold when you're beaten. Your instinct to avoid confrontation becomes a genuine strength here: you won't make the hero calls that bleed money.
That's tight-passive with one repair, and against recreational opponents it's genuinely close to optimal. Your natural read-aversion to conflict costs you almost nothing in a game where nobody's bluffing you much. The only thing you have to override is the reluctance to bet when you're ahead.
For your next few sessions, use this one heuristic and nothing else: if you would be happy to see their cards, bet. Top pair? Bet. Two pair? Bet. Any made hand you think is best? Bet, about half the pot, on every street, until someone raises you.
It's crude, it will occasionally be wrong, and it will still make you more money than any amount of thoughtful checking. Once it's a habit, add the rest of the ladder.
Passive players get targeted. Once a table notices you only bet when you're strong, two things happen: they fold every time you bet, and they bet into you constantly knowing you'll fold. Against attentive opponents you eventually need some unpredictability. Against your current home game, you almost certainly don't yet — so bank the easy money first.
