Position names & why they matter

BTN — the button: Acts last on every street after the flop. The most profitable seat by a wide margin; open ~45% of hands here.
SB / BB — the blinds: Forced bets. You act first postflop, which is why they lose money long-term. BB already has money in, so it defends very wide against a raise.
UTG — under the gun: First to act preflop, with 5 players left to wake up behind you. Open ~16%.
HJ / CO — hijack, cutoff: The two seats before the button. Open progressively wider: ~20% and ~27%.

Pot odds & the 4-2 rule

To call a bet of B into a pot of P, you need to win at least B / (P + 2B) of the time. Call 20 into a pot of 60 → you need 20/100 = 20%.

To count your equity fast: multiply your outs by 4 on the flop (two cards to come) or by 2 on the turn. Nine flush outs on the flop ≈ 36%.

Those two numbers decide most calls. Everything else is a refinement.

Glossary of the terms I'll use

Flop / turn / river: The first 3 shared cards, then the 4th, then the 5th. There's no "doubling down" in poker — on each street you either check, bet, call, raise, or fold.
Equity: Your chance of having the best hand at showdown, given what's known.
Range: The whole set of hands someone could have here. You never play against one hand, you play against a range.
C-bet: Continuation bet — the preflop raiser betting again on the flop.
SPR: Stack-to-pot ratio. Low SPR means it's easy to get all-in; high SPR means play more cautiously with one-pair hands.
Semi-bluff: Betting a draw. You win either when they fold, or when you hit.

Where you're sitting

Positions are named by distance from the dealer button, counting clockwise. The button moves one seat every hand, so your position changes every hand.

Before the flop action starts at UTG and ends with the big blind. After the flop it starts at the small blind and ends at the button — which is why the button is the best seat and the blinds are the worst.

The six seats

BTN the button, the dealer: Acts last on every street after the flop. Opens ~43% of hands.
SB small blind: Posts half a big blind, then acts first for the rest of the hand.
BB big blind: Posts a full big blind. Last to act before the flop, first after it.
UTG under the gun: First to act before the flop, five players still behind. Opens ~17%.
HJ hijack: Two seats before the button. Opens ~21%.
CO cutoff: Directly before the button. Named for "cutting off" the button's steal. Opens ~28%.

Actions

Check: Pass without betting. Only possible when nobody has bet.
Call: Match the current bet.
Bet / Raise: Put in more. A "bet" opens the action; a "raise" increases someone else's bet.
Fold / muck: Give up the hand. Costs you nothing more.
3-bet and 4-bet: The blind counts as bet one and an opening raise as bet two — so a re-raise is the third bet. Re-raising that is a 4-bet.
C-bet continuation bet: When the player who raised before the flop bets again on the flop.
Limp: Just calling the big blind before the flop instead of raising. Usually a mistake.
Isolate: Raising over limpers to play the pot heads-up against a weak hand.

The streets

Preflop: Before any shared cards. You have two cards.
Flop: The first three shared cards, dealt together.
Turn: The fourth shared card.
River: The fifth and last shared card.
Showdown: Remaining players reveal. Best five cards out of the seven wins.

Maths

Equity: Your chance of holding the best hand at showdown, given what's known now.
Pot odds: The price of a call. Calling B into a pot of P needs you to win B / (P + 2B) of the time.
Implied odds: Money you expect to win on later streets if you hit. Why small pairs are playable.
Outs: Cards that would improve you to a winner. Multiply by 4 on the flop or 2 on the turn for a rough percentage.
SPR stack-to-pot ratio: Stack divided by pot. Low means committing is easy; high means play one-pair hands cautiously.
EV expected value: What a decision is worth on average, over many repetitions.

Hands & ranges

Range: Every hand someone could have, given how they've played. You play against ranges, never single hands.
AKs / AKo: s = suited (same suit), o = offsuit. AKs is ace-king of the same suit.
RFI raise first in: Opening the pot with a raise when everyone before you folded.
Nut / nutted: The best possible hand on that board.
Draw: A hand that isn't good yet but could become strong — four to a flush, or four to a straight.
Semi-bluff: Betting a draw. You win when they fold, and you can still hit.
Bluff-catcher: A hand that only beats bluffs — it can't call a value bet profitably.
Blocker: A card in your hand that removes a hand from theirs.
Texture: The shape of the board. Dry = disconnected, few draws. Wet = connected or suited, many draws.
GTO: Game theory optimal — a strategy that can't be exploited, even if the opponent knows it.

Player types

VPIP: How often someone voluntarily puts money in preflop. Under 20% is tight; over 40% is loose.
PFR: How often they raise preflop. A big gap below VPIP means a passive caller.
Nit: Extremely tight. Folds unless strong — so believe their bets.
Calling station: Calls far too much, rarely raises. Value bet, never bluff.
TAG: Tight-aggressive. The standard winning style.
LAG: Loose-aggressive. Wide range, lots of pressure, capable of bluffing.
Maniac: Wildly loose and aggressive. Wait for a hand and let them bet into you.

How the coaching works, honestly. Preflop advice comes from standard 6-max 100bb opening and defending charts — that part is solid and worth memorizing. Postflop advice is computed live: a Monte-Carlo equity simulation of your hand against each opponent's estimated range, combined with pot odds, board texture, stack-to-pot ratio, and that specific opponent's observed tendencies. It is not a solver. On close spots it will show you the reasoning and the numbers, and reasonable players could take the other line. Treat "Leak" as "worth reviewing", not as gospel. Stacks reset to 100 big blinds every hand so the spots stay standard.
